Charlie Boylan is four feet eight, and mystery writer Julian Rathbone's historical novel recounts his experiences in the Napoleonic Wars and after, when he is working as a secret agent (003) for the British government. In his romp through 19th-century history, Charlie has thwarted an assassination attempt on the life of Queen Victoria and engineered the death of Shelley, the poet, perceived as a dangerous radical element. He has also accompanied Darwin on the Beagle. Best of all, he has written a mendacious, self-glorifying memoir about his life.
