Anne Bronte's 1848 diary-novel is about a woman trying to free herself from a drunken husband and assert her independence in a male-dominated world. Anne Bronte is not as well known as her sisters Charlotte and Emily, but her attempts to grapple with real problems of real women were ahead of their time, and make her work both readable and timely.
