In Amos Oz's third novel, a schoolteacher named Elisha Pomeranz escapes the Nazis by means of a magical flight that eventually lands him in Israel. Meanwhile, his wife ends up in Stalinist Russia. Eventually, the two are reunited in Israel, where Elisha has become a simple shepherd.
