She has no interest in the politics of Eldwold, until Coren of Sirle, a young lord from a rebellious noble family, gives her the baby son of the king to raise. As a result, Sybel is forced out of her physical and emotional isolation, and driven by the competing pressures of love and hate to unleash her magic upon Eldwold.
