A Danish couple, married 30 years, splits up when Martin falls in love with Susanne. His wife, Irene, takes the opportunity to take a cold, hard look at herself, and her reevaluation of her life includes tracking down her real father, a cellist, whose existence is revealed to her in a diary kept by her mother. Traveling to Vienna, she finds her father, and also comes to terms with the effect on her of the death, long ago, of her twin brother.
