Veterinarian (and ex-con) Dr. David Westbrook, a star of several award-winning stories, finally gets his own mystery novel. Westbrook's attempt to live quietly in a small Michigan town proves futile when he discovers the skeleton of Rachel Hayes, a woman who apparently died in 1871 during a fire, inside an old well. What should be the coldest of cases turns very hot indeed as David's investigation into the true circumstances of Rachel's long-past demise leads to death and fire in the present day.

One room can hold so much history, and Georgina Lott remembers a lot that went on in the borning room off the kitchen. She herself was born there, her grandfather died in that room; her brother was born there with the help of a runaway slave, and her mother died after giving birth to another brother, who was then nursed back to health by Georgina. Now an old woman, Georgina is lying in the room, waiting for her turn to die, and remembering all that went on in there.
