Inspired by Clarisse, Montag does two radical, forbidden things: he begins to read, and he begins to think. One of Bradbury`s definitive works, FAHRENHEIT 451 is an amazingly prescient book, anticipating not only social but technological trends. Bradbury described a world where people would be surrounded--bombarded, in fact--by their televisions and personal sound systems, and where the threat of war is a sufficient excuse to limit freedom. Today, individual acts of censorship are continually flaring up around the country, and many people never even bother to pick up a book once they`ve finished their schooling. FAHRENHEIT 451 is the banner book for organizations fighting these trends--both censorship and simple apathy.

Over the course of nearly 50 years, A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES has made its way into the holiday season and become an enduring classic. This is the first volume in a shojo manga (Japanese female-oriented graphic novel) series concerning a young man's adventures in a high school dorm populated with misfits. Kazuya Hasukawa's life has been a seemingly endless series of catastrophes and humiliations: various painful accidents have delayed his entrance to high school, his idolized brother has married Kazuya's crush and become a male nurse--and, worse still, is running the infirmary in Kazuya's new school. Things seem unlikely to go any more smoothly once he's actually arrived at the school, a prestigious all-boys academy, and at his peculiar new dorm, Greenwood. The student body president and the dorm's head resident, an offensively gorgeous pair of friends, delight in playing pranks on him. And his roommate Shun, despite protests to the contrary, certainly looks a great deal like a girl. Presented in its original Japanese right-to-left orientation, the black-and-white art is typical shojo, eschewing elaborate backgrounds in favor of a tight focus on the pretty-looking characters (both male and female). The manga has somewhat of a cult status among American fans, and also inspired a six-episode anime miniseries of the same name.
