In Garrison Keillor's comic novel, Larry Wyler is living in St. Paul with his wife, Iris, but he longs for the bright lights of the big city--New York. When his first novel hits it big, he's offered a job at the New Yorker magazine, and off he goes. But the New Yorker is not what he thought it was: the magazine Keillor has created is an amalgam of fact and fancy dominated by the Mafia, and Larry doesn't exactly thrive there. Then he starts writing an advice column similar to the one real-life Keillor wrote for Salon magazine. Twenty years ago Sarah Whitman`s father seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth after embezzling one million dollars from a bank in their small Maine town. Unable to live with the shame, Sarah`s mother killed herself.
Sarah subsequently spent the rest of her childhood with an aunt in New Orleans. When Sarah`s father`s body is pulled from a lake, Sarah returns to Maine to prove to everyone what she has believed all along--that her father committed no crime and is an innocent man. However, the townspeople aren`t so quick to believe Sarah`s theory, and she must turn to childhood friend Tony DeMarco to help prove her father` innocence. Tony, however, is hiding his own secrets, and as Sarah falls in love with him she risks putting herself in serious danger.
