Compared to his Nova Tetralogy, Burroughs has adopted a more conventional style here, borrowing liberally from genre fiction. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, THE WILD BOYS tells the story of teenage gangs of marauders that emerge from North Africa in 1969, first as gasoline gangs, who pour gas and ignite people for fun. But when one boy is used in a cigarette commercial, the ranks swell and go underground. As the Wild Boys, they begin to specialize in different kinds of killing, and to destroy the armies deployed to keep order. The gangs move out of the desert and into the suburbs, toward the cities. It seems they have the ability to return from the dead. Eventually, they eradicate the need for women in their packs, artificially inseminating females, and then raising the boys as warriors, so they never see or hear a woman.
