Having teamed up with the creator of the series, his mother Anne, on the previous Dragonriders of Pern novel, Todd McCaffrey now goes solo. The life-destroying spores known as Thread have not fallen on the planet Pern for 200 years, but their return is imminent. The dragonriders of Pern, trained to burn Thread from the sky, are preparing to meet the danger for the first time in their lives. But then an unknown plague begins afflicting the dragons. The entire population of Pern may be doomed unless Lorana, human rider of the queen dragon Arith, can locate a cure, the key to which lies centuries ago in the early days of Pern`s colonization.
