Continuing his close scrutiny of the fine line separating the theatrical from the real, Alan Ayckbourn serves up three new plays, collectively known as Damsels in Distress. Written to be performed by the same cast with the same luxurious riverside apartment as a set, each play deftly explores the enigmatic duality of role-playing--including a daughter trying out the call-girl lifestyle to help with the family budget, and a night of romance between neighbors who aren't who they say they are--while continuing to offer Ayckbourn's signature dose of penetrating humor.

Set during the Salem witchcraft trials, this play is most famous for its metaphor for McCarthyism--in fact, three years after the play was produced, Miller himself was called before HUAC. In the play, Miller used colonial language to near-poetic effect; the plot involves characters who have to make certain moral choices concerning their communities and their friends. Miller explores the handy scapegoat that an accusation of witchcraft can be: a father can dismiss his daughter's behavior, a landowner can acquire still more land, a serving girl can attract attention to herself, and emotions can be displaced onto other people. Miller fully explores the power of an accusing figure.

Though Heaney lets ideology interfere with tragedy, he has nonetheless composed a poem full of brilliant strokes. He cannot approach the kaleidoscopic metrical effects of the original (no one can), but he varies his rhythms ingeniously. It is doubtful that these register on the stage when it is performed, but on the page they are compelling....The choral odes have a clarity far from the allusive teasings of the original, but dramatic in this new context, and of a searing beauty. Heaney omits the more obscure elements, or the simply repetitive ones (as in the famous song on human mystery). His rapt descriptions of Teiresias' augury equal the ability of Christopher Logue, in his Homer translations, to make these exotic things come creepily alive for us.
