Catherine, the daughter of a once-brilliant mathematician, is at the center of this play. Caring for her aging father, Catherine is at once attracted and repelled by her father's genius. She is torn between returning to New York with her sister, and helping an old student of her father salvage something meaningful from the stacks of notes her father kept. Falling in love with this student, Catherine learns how much she and her father may have in common. This play won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama and a 2001 Tony Award for best play.

The Burial at Thebes
Though Heaney lets ideology interfere with tragedy, he has nonetheless composed a poem full of brilliant strokes. He cannot approach the kaleidoscopic metrical effects of the original (no one can), but he varies his rhythms ingeniously. It is doubtful that these register on the stage when it is performed, but on the page they are compelling....The choral odes have a clarity far from the allusive teasings of the original, but dramatic in this new context, and of a searing beauty. Heaney omits the more obscure elements, or the simply repetitive ones (as in the famous song on human mystery). His rapt descriptions of Teiresias' augury equal the ability of Christopher Logue, in his Homer translations, to make these exotic things come creepily alive for us.

At the height of his career, the great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen created a new drama reflecting real life of the struggle between the inward needs of his characters and the demands of their social environments. In Michael Meyer's fluent, idiomatic translations of two of Ibsen's most famous plays, The Wild Duck and Hedda Gabler stand as masterpieces of naturalist drama.
