Ellen Wood`s potboiler from Victorian times tells the sad story of Isabel Vane, devoted wife and mother, who in a moment of madness allows herself to be seduced by a man who proves unworthy of her. Penniless and disgraced, abandoned by her lover and rejected by her husband--and hideously disfigured in a railway accident to boot--she takes a job as governess to her own children. They do not recognize her because of her scars, and when her little boy dies, she enters into a melancholic depression and finally dies, but not before revealing to her husband the tragic truth of her identity. A best-seller in its day, EAST LYNNE deeply affected thousands of people, and the stage version, performed in both London and New York in the 1860s, was wildly popular.

Falcon's Egg » Falcon's Egg

Still reeling from her parents' recent divorce, an 11-year-old New Yorker named Falcon is somewhat distracted when she finds an unusual, glowing egg in Central Park. Unsure about what type of egg she has found, Falcon, with the help of her great-aunt Emily and a friendly neighbor, consults an ornithologist from the Museum of Natural History. However, not even the ornithologist is able to predict what will eventually hatch from the mysterious egg. Feeling both curious and protective, Falcon decides to care for the egg until it hatches--a situation which allows her to work through the grief, anger, and disappointment she feels over the breakup of her parents' marriage.
