The coming-of-age story of Dar, a boy living during the Cro-Magnon age. Although a little frightened of the impending responsibilities of adulthood, Dar leaves his tribe in search of the stranger from another tribe who offered to trade his spear-thrower--a bow and arrow--for Dar's sun stones. Parting with the stones will be difficult for Dar because they are his last link to his deceased grandfather. However, he also knows knows that the spear-thrower will be of great use to his tribe. Will Dar be able to fulfill his quest and find the stranger?

In the near future, Tristram Foxe and his wife, Beatrice-Joanna, live in their skyscraper world where population control measures sanctioned by the government glorify homosexuality. Eventually, their world is transformed into a chaos of cannibalistic dinning-clubs, fantastic fertility rituals, and wars without anger. The novel maintains Burgess's typically fine balance between grim visions of future life and rich satirical humor.
