Eschewing the misconception that Dickinson (1830-1886) was not engaged in a changing dynamic because of her reclusiveness, this study of her life and work discusses how her decision to cloister herself allowed her greater expression than her age ordinarily permitted. A thorough study of the New England religious revival, which she resisted in her youth, sheds light on her tremendous strength of character.

D. H. Lawrence's THE RAINBOW, declared obscene when it was published in 1915, is the passionately written chronicle of three generations of a Nottingham farming family. Tom Brangwen marries a widow named Lydia Lensky; Lydia's daughter Anna marries her cousin Will, a woodcarver, and has a large family. Their daughter, Ursula, leaves their simple rural world and becomes a schoolteacher--much as Lawrence himself did. She falls in love with Anton Skrebensky and, when he is called away to war, responds to an ardent fellow teacher, a feminist and epitome of the new woman named Winifred. The struggles of Ursula and her sister Gudrun to find their way in a changing world are continued in Lawrence's WOMEN IN LOVE.

After a 14-year-hiatus, SFWA Grand Master Frederik Pohl returns to his multiple- award-winning Heechee series. Using the technology left behind by the alien Heechee, humans have settled all over the galaxy. The Heechee themselves have moved to the galactic core in an attempt to avoid the Kugel, a race bent on genocide. Many humans have joined the Heechee at the core, and some have used the Heechee method of electronically copying their personalities, making them in effect immortal. But this idyllic--and complex--lifestyle is threatened both by the Kugel and a madman, Wan Enrique Santos-Smith, whose xenophobia could result in the destruction of all life.

Henry has a mysterious condition: he is able to travel through time. On one such trip, he meets Clare, visiting her at various times in her life until, finally, the two meet in real time, marry, and have a child--who is also a time-traveler. Henry dies, tragically, at 43--but returns to Clare when she herself is in extreme old age.
